Brickwork Calculation — How Many Bricks Per Square Meter?
Accurate brickwork calculation is essential for every construction project. Order too many bricks and you waste money. Order too few and your site stops. This guide gives you the exact formulas for Indian standard bricks.
Indian Standard Brick Sizes
| Type | Size (mm) | Size with Mortar (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| Standard (Modular) | 190 × 90 × 90 | 200 × 100 × 100 |
| Traditional | 230 × 115 × 75 | 240 × 125 × 85 |
Bricks Per Square Meter
| Wall Type | Thickness | Bricks/m² (Modular) | Bricks/m² (Traditional) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Half Brick Wall | 4.5 inch (115mm) | 50 | 55 |
| Full Brick Wall | 9 inch (230mm) | 100 | 110 |
Step-by-Step Calculation
- Calculate wall area: Length × Height (in meters)
- Subtract openings: Doors (2.1m × 0.9m each) + Windows (1.2m × 1.2m each)
- Multiply by bricks/m²: Net area × 55 (half-brick) or 110 (full-brick)
- Add wastage: Add 5-10% for breakage and cutting
Example: Full Brick Wall
Wall: 10m long × 3m high, with 1 door (2.1m × 0.9m) and 2 windows (1.2m × 1.2m each)
Cement & Sand for Brick Mortar
| Mortar Ratio | Cement per 1000 Bricks (bags) | Sand per 1000 Bricks (cft) | Use Case |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1:4 | 1.8 | 10 | Load-bearing walls, wet areas |
| 1:6 | 1.25 | 9 | Standard walls (most common) |
| 1:8 | 0.9 | 8 | Non-load-bearing partitions |
Cost Estimation (2026)
| Item | Quantity (per 1000 bricks) | Rate | Cost (₹) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Red Bricks | 1000 nos | ₹10/piece | ₹10,000 |
| Cement | 1.25 bags | ₹390/bag | ₹488 |
