Tiles Calculation for Flooring: How Many Tiles Do You Need?
Ordering tiles is deceptively easy to get wrong: buy too few and you risk a dye-lot mismatch on the reorder; buy too many and cash sits on the floor. Here's the reliable method.
The formula
Tiles needed = Room area ÷ Tile area, + wastage.
Worked example
A 12ft × 10ft room = 120 sq ft. Using 2ft × 2ft tiles (4 sq ft each):
- 120 ÷ 4 = 30 tiles
- Add 8% wastage = 33 tiles
- At 4 tiles/box = 9 boxes
Don't forget
- Dye lots — order the full quantity in one go so colour matches.
- Skirting — add separately, usually running feet of wall.
- Pattern/diagonal layouts increase wastage to 10%+.
